Student Dialogues

GEBG’s Global Student Dialogues provide students the opportunity for intercultural dialogue and connect thousands of students with their peers from schools across North America and more than 25 countries around the world. These dialogues have addressed topics of global significance such as climate change and gender equality, topics related to global current events such as the ongoing war in Ukraine, and various UN Sustainable Development Goals in order to develop the student intercultural communication and perspective-taking. Students engage in conversations in small groups, sharing their experiences and thoughts on the topic and practicing essential skills related to respectful civil discourse – students report that the two skills they most practice in this program are listening for understanding and listening with empathy. GEBG has developed and hosted these dialogues with the generous support of the E.E. Ford Foundation.

During the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years, GEBG hosted free 60- and 90-minute student dialogues on topics of current importance, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which allowed hundreds of students to engage with global perspectives and experiences, while learning to communicate amidst cultural and linguistic differences through intercultural dialogue.

Topics for the 2021-22 school year can be found below; in 2020-21, topics included global COVID-19 vaccine distribution, ethical leadership on climate issues, global perspectives on justice, youth action for global causes, and making meaning of world events through the media.

We ask that student participants be enrolled by a faculty member at the school who will act as a participant and facilitator in addition to supporting and potentially recruiting the student participants. Student participants must be selected before the faculty member can enroll the group–only one submission per dialogue is permitted. Up to ten student participants can be enrolled per dialogue. Enrollment in Middle School Dialogues is for students ages 12-14 (7-8 grades for U.S. schools) and High School Dialogue enrollment is for students ages 14-18 (9-12 grades for U.S. schools). Participant groups will be accepted on a first-come–first-served basis. There will be an adult educator from a participating member school or GEBG staff member in all breakout discussion rooms.

GEBG has member schools in 17 countries and across multiple regions of the United States, so these dialogues will be composed of multiple experiences and viewpoints. In addition, GEBG member schools are welcome to invite any of their international partner schools as many of you have indicated that you are in early stages of discussing virtual exchanges with those partners. We will also be opening up a “faculty lounge” prior to each call for faculty participants who might want to connect and discuss virtual exchanges and partnership possibilities.

Spaces are limited in support of frank and open dialogue based on trust and available for member schools and international partner schools. Registration for each dialogue will close five days prior.
